From Playtime Foundation website:
Our sponsored event for the hospital is known as the CHOC Cruise and takes place in December. Everyone participating is asked to bring a new unwrapped toy to donate. The foundation invites custom car enthusiasts and clubs from all over California to participate. In recent years the CHOC Cruise has even attracted clubs and individuals from other states. A wide array of vehicles can be seen at the cruise including: classics, mini-trucks, low riders, 4X4’s, and sport compact cars.
From 10:00 am to 12:00 pm vehicles gather in lot in anticipation of the event. People and clubs intermingle and take pictures with the Santa’s Helpers . At 12:00 pm the caravan leaves for the hospital where the children anxiously wait. Those who are well enough are brought down to the front of the hospital to watch the caravan and play in the vehicles parked in front of the hospital. Each year five or so vehicles are selected to sit in front of the hospital. Children are allowed to enter said vehicles to take pictures and hit the switches. Playtime Foundation also provides a Santa Clause to entertain and the children during the event. As the vehicles enter the front of the hospital they pass their donations to the Santa’s helpers and wave to the children as they exit.
CHOC is Orange County’s only free standing hospital dedicated solely to the care of children. No child is ever turned away regardless of a family’s ability to pay. In 2007 alone, the hospital provided more than $60 million in uncompensated care.
