    `89 Notchback Motor build

Here's where my spare time has been going recently (spare time being none lately )

Old combo - stock `87 forged roller longblock with a few bolt-ons

    249rwhp - 295rwtq baseline dyno.

Broke the throw out bearing sleeve clean in 2, I drove it like this for about a year, heaviest clutch EVER, but it never made noise or chattered so F'it
I bought the summit steel upgraded sleeve to replace, along with a new clutch fork and TOB.

Torn down, ignore the AOD in the background, it's a spare for my girlfriends `91 convertible lx 5.0

During cleaning, 'Easy off' brand oven cleaner is the shit! That, and green scotchbrite pads with WD-40 are all I used.

    Like new

TFS Stage 1 cam, TFS billet roller timing set, installed dot-to-dot.

TFS heads, ARP headstuds, MLS Permatorque gaskets, Trick flow valve cover studs with rubber valve cover gaskets, stripped and painted stock valve covers, Scorpion 1.6 RR

New timing cover, summit SFI balancer, ARP balancer bolt

High volume oil pump, Canton main stud support / girdle, Canton pickup tube (not in picture - Canton windage tray, to be installed still)

Shot showing off the baffle doors of my Canton 7qt road racing oil pan.

So now for opinions, paint the heads black to match?

Eventually I am going to get the black wrinkle finish powered by ford valve covers with the silver accents, and plan to paint my intake manifold wrinkle black and polish up the raised lettering and such.

I know the heads will get dirty and tarnish, so I'm definately not going to polish them, so I think I'll be painting them to match the block. What about the pan, does paint stick well to that zinc finish, or does it react like chrome and flake off? How about the accessories...I was thinking of doing them black but the brackets and such in silver, my vortech 8 rib crank and headunit pullies are black, but my supercharger is silver (but I can easily paint it black...). My intercooler tubing is already powder coated black, and the engine bay is black....too much black? Hahaha....

The pistons cleaned-up nicely! What is was the cylinder ridge like? Or was there a ridge?
Let us know what you learn about paint on zinc, if nobody here responds.

Do you think you'll have it ready for the All Mustang and Ford Club dyno day coming on May 16th? -> http://www.westcoastgearheads.com/fo...event&calEid=4

The Easy-Off oven cleaner was brilliant! It sure did the trick. I like the black valve covers, too.

There was no ridge at all

I might be in the car and running, but I won't be able to make that dyno day because that day Carli receives her Masters of Science from CLU so I have prior engagements

and once it's in the car I need to have it dyno tuned, and I'm not sure how smoothly that will go.

will do, at this point I have no idea when though, but that's where I'll be tuning it

Nice build Kevin. I'm a fan of the wrinkle finish too.

I painted my heads but they're just modified E7s. I would probably leave the Al bare but it really comes down to cleaning and such. I agree they don't look so great with stains.

I can't wait to see what it makes. Those twisted wedge heads always put down good numbers when set up right. Which I know you will.

made some more progress today, oil pump/pickup/girdle/windage tray/oil pan/waterpump are all setup and torqued now.

method of boost has changed plans though, I'm switching from my vortech to an ATI Procharger P-1SC with a 3 core intercooler, AFM power pipe, and bosche BOV.

Oh well, back to the garage

    Re: `89 Notchback Motor build

Got my new procharger P1SC setup mocked up, and yes that a/c and p/s brackets are staying, I'm putting a/c and p/s onto the car for the first time since it was a 4cyl

    Shown with the AFM powerpipe

    3 core intercooler and piping

I also painted up the intake manifold, not quite done with it, but a good idea of how it will look, I sanded back the lettering on the upper and lower intake, I like how it came out

Well the motor's "done" and ready to drop in, started hiding the engine bay wiring today, didn't get a whole lot done because did a bunch of mothers day shit for my girls mom, and washed all of my cars (!).

But yeah, so close to back together. The plan is all motor brackets will be black like the motor, and all accessories (p/s, a/c, blower, alternator) will be silver like the water pump.

I'd like to keep it under 500rwhp.

I'd like to have 400rwhp, but I think it will be hard with the motor combo. The stock block is only good for so much, I added a 1/2" steel main stud support girdle which will help though...

That is not a Volkswagon motor.

    Re: `89 Notchback Motor build

400rwhp is a pretty respectible number! can't wait to see that beast running!

  21. #21

    Re: `89 Notchback Motor build

well 400rwhp is where I'd like it to be so that the block will live a long, happy life, but it will probably be closer to the 500rwhp range until I dial in the right pulley combination to tame it down, the pulley's the procharger came with are setup for 14psi, which would put me at 460 - 530rwhp (figuring on 10-15hp per psi)...which should split the block right down the middle after a few months, hahaha....

this weekends progress, new pilot bearing, throwout bearing, clutch fork, pivot ball, then old spec stage 2 clutch/bellhousing, T5 trans is up and in, FRPP aluminum driveshaft is back in, BBK o/r X-pipe is in...doesn't look like a ton of progress but the pilot bearing took me the better part of saturday, slide hammer pulled the center out of the old bearing so I had some fun getting the rest of the bearing out of the crank...oh well, as far as I can tell the major peices are all basically done and back in the car

    somebody stole my bumper

3 core intercooler, hidden by the bumper when installed, and upgraded bosche bypass valve all mocked up, all the piping is good to go, just need some slight modifications on the maf/throttle body tube, and I need to enlarge the hole in the inner fender to fit the 5" AFM power pipe.

got my new wheels this weekend too, swapped my re-01r's over onto them, they still look/work like new even with 4 track days on them
